This was a solid backpacking trip, with 9 scouts and 5 adults braving the above 90 degree heat to camp on the shore of Kelly Lake, over 8 miles away from the parking lot of the Hunting Hollow entrance. We followed the originally planned itinerary of Anza Trail, Jackson Trail, Wasno Road and Kelly Lake Trail on the way in, and Kelly Lake Trail, Wasno Road, Dexter Trail, Grizzly Gulch Trail on the way back. However, we decided to avoid the complicated car shuttling to drop off our hikers at the trailhead, so that added about 2 miles of hiking on the entrance road. In all, we started at around 850ft elevation and climbed up to 2675ft. For those planning to go to Philmont, this was a very good preparation, and everyone did splendidly. I thank our scout cooking group leaders, Mihir, Andy and Shivum; our trip SPL, Daniel; and introducing our remarkably keen-eyed animal spotter, Phillip , who would not miss tarantulas and other spiders, a praying mantis, a turtle and others. A special thank you to Dennis for helping lead the trip. And also many thanks to Ashima Agarwal for her valuable service as trip coordinator. – M Frei
