23 Scouts and 4 ASMs returned safely from a week at Camp Oljato today. Under the leadership of SPL Alex Oh, his crack team of ASPLs, Lawrence Chen, Josh Brigel, and David Anwyl, and new Patrol Leaders, Shivum Agarwal (Phoenix) and Michael Qu (Fluffy Bunnies), Troop 5 had a successful and fun week, in spite of a camp water shortage for the last two days, and latrines being in and out and in and out of order (including one where the plumbing “exploded” during Troop 5’s latrine duty).
Once again, Troop 5 received the Honor Troop award, but much more fun and satisfying to the Scouts, Troop 5 tied for 3rd place overall in the Olympicaid against 11 other troops. 100% of our Scouts participated, turning in particularly noteworthy performances in the Two Man Saw (1st place: Chris Kawakami, Alex Oh), Timed Climb (2nd place: Matthew Woon), Predator/Prey (3rd place, Drake Chen), Run and Gun (3rd place tie, ASM Calvin Woon), and Scoutmaster Splice (3rd place tie, ASM Fred Babian).
We also had 100% participation in Tribe of Oljato with 7 new Braves, 8 Warriors, and 8 Medicine Men. For the service project, Troop 5 spent 3 hours doing trail repair near the waterfront.
Troop 5 Scouts earned 57 merit badges (plus 15 partials), had one COPE participant, and 7 Scouts participate in Skills Patrols. In addition to merit badges, Brian Chan completed the Mile Swim in 35 minutes with the assistance of Aaron Babian and Joshua Wu acting as rower and spotter. Joshua Chen, Kevin Frans, and Joshua Wu also earned their Firem’n Chits.
We have pre-reserved July 14-20, 2013 for next year’s Camp Oljato, so mark your calenders now!
Please join me in extending special thanks to ASM’s Fred Babian and Calvin Woon for their able and expert efforts all week, to Sri Juvvadi for his welcome help during the first part of the week, to Mark Chen who coordinated all the logistics and communications for the trip, and to our drivers, Dave Kawakami, Ignat Shilov, Jana Baxter, Feng Qu, and Yohan Frans.
